Be warned. While many of you know I'm a gen gal, I will be discussing about Janto (spelling?) because frankly, it's canon, they're adorable, so live with it, okay? :)

Never has there been such an anticipation for a show like this before. Ironically, shorter due to BBC purse strings, we are blessed with a mega story that spans 5 episodes long. Brilliant.

That word almost sums up the episode. Almost. Don't get me wrong, the episode so far has been from one breath stopping moment to the next, but there were some points that were stilted.

The opening scene in Scotland and the following scenes with the children were chilling. The direction, leisure camera pans all added up to probably the scariest scenes I've witness and oh look, no CGI. LOL.

Jack and Ianto are in the hospital in the beginning and frankly, a snappy pair of banter that was just fun to watch. Echoing faintly of their good cop/bad cop, they've come to do a little alien retrieval and -ewww-, that part was completely unnecessary!

The secondary characters here from the PM to the doomed Doctor (no, not that one), were interesting and were essential in the storytelling and information dispensing, but at times, it felt like they were taking away the spotlight from Torchwood. I could be wrong of course because it is only the first part and plots need to be set up.

Watching the mystery build while periodically peeking back into all three Torchwood members' lives was fun. Gwen's still ongoing struggles to balance Torchwood with her personal life, Ianto's family (the brother-in-law irked me though) and Jack's -gasp= family (although when you really think about it, it's not that big of a shock) all take turns as the story progresses. And Rhys? How can you not love that guy?

The enemy in the form of a mean-looking woman (mean! mean!) is, what I feel, a tad over the top in her determination to get rid of Torchwood. She's a dramatic foil, a convenient conflict that I'm still not quite sure about.

I still think she's mean though. She blew up Jack! Literally!

Which brings me to the cliffhanger and once more, to the Janto. The bomb was a bit of a shock to me and to Torchwood. We get nice scene about Gwen's future then...tick, tick, tick. I did love how, despite Jack's immortality, they didn't want to leave Jack to go to pieces. (pun fully intended) Ianto's refusal was a heartbreaker because his "there will be nothing left" really speaks more than just the bomb itself but also about their relationship versus who Jack is. And Jack's "I'll come back. I always do"?

-hugs Mr. Wubbles the bear all sappy like-

Part 2 is going to be killer!

1. Jack and Ianto: Okay, whether you read slash or not, you can't deny the pairing and I loved how the writers don't either or tried to stuff it in a drawer. The hug when Jack came back to Torchwood looked painfully awkward and forced but could be seen as within character because they're both at the point of trying to define who they are. (couple?) The other scenes like in the hospital and the heartbreaking lockdown scene, the two were really at their best in conveying their feelings for each other. Slash/het/gen, you can't help but root for them.

2. Rhys and Gwen: The pregnancy and the way it was presented to us just before the Hub went kablooey fills me with dread, but aside from that, this pair is growing to be one of my favorite duos on television. The conflict between Torchwood and life was presented to us so sincerely.

3. Tosh and Owen: Sniffle, never do you miss them more until Gwen greeting their photo hello.

Cookie crumbs: Now, normally I would go on and on about the plot, the music, my dislikes, everything but I'm going to wait until the completion of the series. The first episode of anything is hard to use as a baseline of future episodes and Part 1 is no different. It's a great start so far with only minor speed bumps but will the next episode keep it's momentum or like Jack's bomb, blow up in their faces.

A tentative four cookie rating, one held back because I want to wait and see.

I too am a gen-girl but I also love Jack & Ianto :)

I don't know if it's because they have built it up so nicely - they became a 'couple' (and the way that kept coming up was very amusing) in a realistic way and the fact that they are two men is almost not even an issue. You believe that they actually care about and love each other, rather than it being a gratuitous thing or just to appeal to a certain genre.

Also Ianto has really grown as a character and his dry humour has me in fits. I'm almost as much of a fan of his now as I am of Jack..

I too had the odd niggle with the first episode but I'm keeping an open mind. Even Gwen has stopped annoying me, the way she did in S1 and some of S2..

Looking forward to tonight's continuation ;)
