mrwubbles: (ST Broken But Unbowed)
[personal profile] mrwubbles
Okay, with the movie came the overwhelming thirst for h/c for many of us. And let's face it, Nu!Kirk (does anyone get a flashback to that time when Coke came out with a new formula? No? Must be just me then. LOL), has given us much fodder for him to be the recipient. Dude, he was choked (twice), beaten up (trice), marooned (just once), got the Vulcan-version of a hello (oh my flipping God, give him an aspirin already) and lost Daddy Kirk all within 2hrs 6mins. Ouch! Someone give him a hug already!

Not since Stargate SG-1 have I seen such an explosion of fic, vids and icons flooding the datastreams. I've spent many lost days (Huh? What do you mean it's morning already?) perusing the fic and oooh, I am nowhere near done! A few so far has stood out and to return the favor (revenge) of many sending me recs of my other fandoms, I thought I would make a list here of my own.

NEW ADDED AS OF August 2, 2009

Title: At the Going Down of the Sun NEW
Author: Dee at [livejournal.com profile] cupiscent
Rating: (author only states as General, no G-R given)
Word Count: none given
Summary: "Rules of the universe," he declares, and then corrects himself before Spock can get his astrophysics on. "Rules of humanity. Warriors who've drawn weapons, shed blood, triumphed together must drink together." (The consequences of actions, and the rules that you cannot bend or ignore.)

Link: http://cupiscent.livejournal.com/484262.html?style=mine

Reader Notes: In the movie, none of us (audience or cast) was given time to grieve. Dee gives us that chance with a wonderful, quietly mourning aftermath fic. It starts out innocuously enough: Jim wanting a drink, but gradually we are pulled into a more somber emotion. It's quiet, understated yet emotionally rich as the crew slowly gathers to take comfort in each other's presence.

Title: Shades of Grey NEW
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kiraboshi
Rating: PG-13
Word Count:
Summary: When the Enterprise's first diplomatic mission goes awry, her captain and crew discover a deception running deep on both sides, and risk everything to save those caught in the middle.

Link: http://kiraboshi.livejournal.com/382876.html

Reader Notes: If you ever wished to see this Reboot 'verse on the small screen, [livejournal.com profile] kiraboshi has achieved it with this wonderful well structured plot. Five words fit this fic because to go on and delaying you from reading this would be criminal: angsty, friendship, team, comforty, brilliant. And if like me, you like to curl up on a fic, there's even a compiled PDF for you here-->http://samanthakira.com/fic/shadesofgrey.pdf Did I mention brilliant yet?

Title: Shooting the Moon NEW
Author: [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine
Rating: none given
Word Count: 5100
Summary: none given

Link: http://miss-porcupine.livejournal.com/297892.html?style=mine

Reader Notes: We follow Kirk from a bar in Iowa to the rise of captain. Sounds daunting perhaps but the author has tackled this story with a Kirk POV that's reflective and a bit melancholy that just simply makes you fall in love with Jim Kirk all over again.

Title: Tendencies NEW
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iceiwynd
Rating: none given
Word Count: 8300+
Summary: Five times one of the crew thought about suicide, and the one time someone did more than think.

Link: http://iceiwynd.livejournal.com/740790.html

Reader Notes: This was recced to me with very good reason. It is a solid, emotionally saturated embodiment of how life, while wasn't perfect for our favorite characters, powers on to something better. The something better, we've already seen: everyone coming together in the movie. Many fics graces us with the continuing "happy ever after" but very rarely do we see the before done so eloquently. [livejournal.com profile] iceiwynd gave us five perfectly shaped glimpses of the before, of five people pushed to the edge of doing the unthinkable and what pulled them back. What caught my eye, what made me inhaled this fic is that fact you feel for the characters, pushed along that very same brink and then yanked back. It's in-character, it's gut-wrenching real that when you get to the deceptively innocuous line in the end, you suddenly realize you've been holding your breath all this time.

Title: When I Was Invincible NEW
Author: [livejournal.com profile] robanybody
Rating: none given
Word Count: none given (but at estimation, I would say ten pages)
Summary: none given

Link: http://robanybody.livejournal.com/382255.html

Reader Notes: Despite the lack of story header info, this fic is definitely worth a read. The POV is adorkably nu!Kirk, impish, charming and yet utterly the captain we know he could be. He's a psychotic golden retriever in this fic. It's another ion storm, another transporter malfunction and Kirk is trapped in the Prime universe. The collision of these two universes is hysterical and the fun is as enjoyable and memorable as our beloved "The Trouble With Tribbles". The plot is classic with a dismayed attitude of "Oh no, not another alternate universe". The banter is spot on, everyone stays in character and if the above gush fest isn't convincing you, read it for this line:

"Captain's log, supplemental: today Spock made a joke. I laughed. I cried. It was magical."

That pretty much sums up the fic for me.

LIST OF STAR TREK XI GEN FIC RECS
Title: At the Going Down of the Sun NEW
Author: Dee at [livejournal.com profile] cupiscent
Rating: (author only states as General, no G-R given)
Word Count: none given
Summary: "Rules of the universe," he declares, and then corrects himself before Spock can get his astrophysics on. "Rules of humanity. Warriors who've drawn weapons, shed blood, triumphed together must drink together." (The consequences of actions, and the rules that you cannot bend or ignore.)

Title: But Not Jim Kirk
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jedibuttercup
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 2000
Summary: He hadn't thought about what it would sound like to Gary, who had four more years' service under his belt and not a chance in hell of following the same meteoric track.

Link: http://jedibuttercup.livejournal.com/317306.html

Reader Notes: Remember Gary Mitchell? The movie had pretty much passed over him but he is not forgotten. In fact, [livejournal.com profile] jedibuttercup uses him brilliantly as the prop here, using him to show us the Kirk before and the evolution of a starship captain. We see, through conversations between Mitchell and Kirk, just how much Kirk had to grow up post Nero and the man he'll become.

Title: By Any Other Name
Author: [livejournal.com profile] moogsthewriter
Rating: T
Word Count: 5500
Summary: Cultural miscommunications are annoying for everyone, but they’re almost always painful for Jim Kirk. AKA, Five times aliens mistook Kirk for someone (or something) else, and one time they didn’t.

Link: http://moogsthewriter.livejournal.com/64280.html

Reader Notes: I was content to leave my recs list the way it was, but [livejournal.com profile] moogsthewriter had to reel me in with another one of her fantastic stories. This one was a stronger focus on Jim, yet she doesn't ignore the rest of the crew. The number of items fics have a notorious reputation of threading free floating vignettes together, but here, [livejournal.com profile] moogsthewriter has given us a substantial, tightly woven piece circling around Kirk and how a simple misunderstanding can make things go wrong. The stories within the story are complete, story number five just about killed me, the last one was a perfect end to the story. Like dessert after a very fulfilling and satisfying five course meal. Sweet, warm and oh so good but without the calories. Bravo, [livejournal.com profile] moogsthewriter!

Title: Discovered Check
Author: waketosleep
Pairing: Spock/Kirk preslash, disguised as friendly gen fic ;)
Rating: : G
Word count: ~1000
Summary: Spock discovers that Kirk has been holding out on him.

Link: http://waketosleep.dreamwidth.org/5059.html

Reader Notes: Now, I know the pre-slash may surprise some. At the recommendation of a friend, I checked it out and honestly, if it weren't for the label, I personally thought it was fine as gen. That said and done, let's move on:

We know Spock is brilliant. We know McCoy is, too, but didn't anyone wonder about Kirk? The movie glosses over the fact that Kirk is a unique and singular thinker and here in this fic, we're reminded that Kirk is. It's a great narration, the scene between Kirk and Spock toes the line of where they are when the movie ends and where they will be as Spock Prime implied. (That's where you decide for yourself if this is more gen or slash for you).

Title: Et in Arcadia Ego
Author: [livejournal.com profile] chaletian
Rating: PG
Summary: The air is calm, the scents rich and alien and beautiful, but the sky is the wrong colour; the moons the wrong number; and Spock says, “You cannot help him.” McCoy and Spock on an away mission.

Link: http://chaletian.livejournal.com/358534.html

Reader Notes: Shocking, I know, this isn't a Kirk-centric fic, rather one of McCoy and Spock. This duo usually falls victim of bickering of rationality versus cantankerous attitude, so much so, it's become a bit cliché, a bit of a cartoon. In this case, while the two are still at odds, there's a reason why; two worlds of duty/beliefs colliding. The story takes an unflinching look at these two men. It's not fluffy. It's not life as cotton candy; it's blunt in its honesty about these two and a begrudging agreement to agree that they disagree. So raw, it's beautiful.

Title: Family
Author: [livejournal.com profile] schweinsty
Rating: R
Characters: Kirk-centric, ensemble appearances
Word Count: 2824
Summary: James Tiberius Kirk does not need a family. He's got everything else.

Link: http://community.livejournal.com/ficcy_fic/35371.html

Reader Notes: We forget sometimes just how much more broken this Nu!Kirk is, how one event can change a man yet still can eventually end up the same captain of the Enterprise. The author has taken us into the brash, rough POV of Kirk and take us into the metamorphosis of a ship captain, tugging at our heartstrings as we're swept up into her narration on his fragmented background. The language is strong at times and there are moments that might make you wince, but so is Kirk's barbed life and when we get to the end of the story, it's all good.

Title: Fathers and Sons
Author: [livejournal.com profile] moogsthewriter
Rating: PG
Word Count: 950+
Summary: It's Father's Day.

Link: http://moogsthewriter.livejournal.com/56079.html?format=light

Reader Notes: Don't let the simple summary fool you. There is nothing simple about this masterpiece. The myriad of emotions and comfort from McCoy's POV not as a CMO, but as a father and friend, would just bring tears to your eyes. The comfort after is a quiet dignity that just speaks of the friendship between Kirk and McCoy. We get hi-jinxes, hilarity and arguments often with these two, but the author explored a more subtle side of the dynamic: the silent support we don't often see in the public eye. The last scene with Jim alone in his quarters brought me to tears. It's a short piece, but the wealth of emotions it brings forth in the reader is astonishing.

Title: Five Things About Kirk That Surprise Spock
Author: [livejournal.com profile] general_public
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1,788
Summary: No summary given, but the title's pretty self-explanatory.

Link: http://general-public.livejournal.com/2480.html

Reader Notes: 2nd person narrative is not something I usually read as it's a POV that often sets a tone that not quite syncs with the character in question. Not so in this case. Recommended to me by [livejournal.com profile] brate7, this 2nd POV is the perfect foil to use for Spock. The narrative masterfully echoes Spock's own detachment yet depicts so well how his emotionally detachment is slowly giving way to something warmer. It's how Jim, in all his charm and energy, has managed to sway Spock into their inevitable friendship without even trying. And the writer, in her delightful way, finds a way to charm you as well.

Title: Getting Out
Author: [livejournal.com profile] cole_chan
Rating: PG-13 for violence
Summary: Caught in the outbreak of a war, McCoy and Spock must work together to get an injured Kirk out alive.

Link: http://community.livejournal.com/gins_lair/9619.html

Reader Notes: Take a look at this illustration here: OMG!. Yeah. The fic is about this. And it's fantastic. Now go read.

Title: How to Win Friends and Influence Vulcans
Author: Green
Rating: G
Spoilers: Watching the movie would be nice.
Summary: Having a best friend who didn't know he was your best friend was frustrating. That did not, however, deter Kirk.

Link: http://green.dreamwidth.org/2407.html

Reader Notes: It's an adorable Kirk POV the author treats us to: a brighter voice of youth, brash amusement and single-minded determination that got him through that whole Nero business to begin with. It carries you into the story and you'll find yourself smiling in the end.

Title: Impulse
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wildtiger7
Rating: R, for language
Summary: "For a reason never to be identified, Kirk wakes up in the middle of the night, his head pounding from a hangover, with the irrepressible urge to run to the new Vulcan home world."

Link: http://wildtiger7.livejournal.com/266068.html

Reader Notes: It's a wonderful glimpse of the beginnings of friendship. It's awkward, it's clumsy and not often is it right, but Kirk's tenacity gets through the standoffish barriers eventually. The writer tells us in wonderful storytelling style that makes you regret when you see the words "The End".

Title: In The Walls
Author: [livejournal.com profile] irnan
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1800
Summary: "So I hear the Enterprise has giant alien rats," Sulu said one morning at breakfast. Chekov choked on his bacon, eyes wide and alarmed. Jim clapped him on the back, laughing.

Link: http://irnan.livejournal.com/115034.html

Reader Notes: I really can't get enough of the slice of life on the Enterprise fics. It defaults to a level of effortless comfort. [livejournal.com profile] irnan's fic is a prime example of this. Where the initial query seems innocent enough, it spreads throughout the ship in only life on a ship can with rumors, hi-jinks and absolute hilarity. The end scene is hysterical and you can't help but join them as they try to figure out who, what, where. The end is just the right dose of "Aw" and the characters? So real in the light-hearted se3nse that you're surprised when you glance over and not find them standing there.

Title: It Takes A Village
Author: [livejournal.com profile] chaletian
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: Not really
Summary: There are times (when being attacked by Klingons, for example) when life on the Enterprise is a million miles away from McCoy’s country practice. There are other times when it’s exactly the same.

Link: http://chaletian.livejournal.com/349779.html

Reader Notes: Чудесно! Chekov is growing up! Sort of. Growing pains on the good ole Enterprise and while I normally don't go for stories like these, Chekov is not treated as a child but as everyone's little brother and it's amusing to see how everyone tries to help. Note the word: tries. Cute little slice of life fic.

Title: James and the Giant Ship
Author: [livejournal.com profile] blcwriter
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 4350
Summary: Starfleet observes the Kelvin disaster; how does Jim Kirk observe his birthday?

Link: http://blcwriter.livejournal.com/9447.html

Reader Notes: It blows my mind that I hadn't included this in my first round of recs. Oddly enough, as I was making this list, I was frantically passing around this rec to my friends. Simply put, the writer has a brilliant sense of how to sucker punch the reader in the story. You react as the characters react and it's freaking wonderful. It's angsty, it's heartbreaking but in the end, [livejournal.com profile] blcwriter gathers up the emotional pieces and makes it all better in the end with a massive serving of comfort that leaves both characters and readers warm and fuzzy inside.

Title: Life, Love and the Universe
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kodiak_bear
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1400
Summary: Spock Prime endures many thoughts.

Link: http://kodiak-bear.livejournal.com/175111.html

Reader Notes: I might be cheating by listing every single one of [livejournal.com profile] kodiak_bear's fics here but darn it, they're just that good. This one in particular gives us a wonderful glimpse into Spock Prime. Abrams did a brilliant move by bringing Spock Prime (Leonard Nimoy) but we sadly never got more than a glance into his own POV. It is a joyful reunion we see but we never fully realize the cost of such reunion. You get that here in this story. You get that clean, straight lined thought so characteristically Spock, tinged with bittersweet as the cost sinks in and yet despite it all, [livejournal.com profile] kodiak_bear gives us hope in the end. Very hard to manage, yet it reads so effortlessly here. Darn her. LOL.

Title: Long Day
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kodiak_bear
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 2900 +
Warnings: Spoilers for Star Trek XI
Summary: Jim got the shit beat out of him, did you really think he'd feel great after all that?

Link: http://kodiak-bear.livejournal.com/174228.html

Reader Notes: It's my greatest pleasure to rec this fic, the first fic slyly passed along to me by [livejournal.com profile] brate7 and started me on my obsession. If the name looks familiar, don't be surprised. She's a veteran of SGA fics, another fandom enriched with a cornucopia of great h/c fics. The name alone should sell this fic, but if that's not enough, how's this: hurt comfort. Sold?

Title: Mind Bullets
Author: [livejournal.com profile] karanguni
Rating: PG
Warning: Set directly before the Romulan attack, in the glory days of peace.
Summary: Kirk versus a machine versus his mind.

Link: http://karanguni.livejournal.com/150800.html

Reader Notes: It's cute, it's amusing, it's Kirk in his cadet years with a dab of Pike and a huge helping of Cadet McCoy. I think sometimes we forget Jim is brilliant. I love how he doesn't flaunt it in this fic, rather, he's almost amused by everyone's reaction to it. He trades off favors with homework, he aggravates McCoy by thinking things just a step too far, he takes what should have been a simple experiment and gets the whole campus (or at least his quad) involved. He's downright charming in his delinquent ways like a twenty-third century Tom Sawyer. He's smart here and so is the almost glib, quirky, to the nail Kirk voice, writing. It's that glimpse of boy genius versus the Kobayashi Maru the movie only hinted at.

Title: Murphy's Law of Jim Kirk Diplomacy
Author: [livejournal.com profile] _seven_crows
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: Eh, vaguely.
Summary: "Great," Kirk says. "In the end, it's not going to be punching someone in the face, or shooting something, or even in some barfight – it's going to be a goddamned diplomatic mission gone wrong that does me in."

Link: http://users.livejournal.com/_seven_crows/13837.html

Reader Notes: In typical Trek fashion, a routine mission goes wrong. The fic starts out with the classic: someone hurt, someone(s) worry, but out of the ordinary premise, we get this extraordinary control of characterization, banter and just enough occasional "Oh, damn, I think we're in deep [bleep]" to remind us that their situation is dire. The dialogue is wonderful: McCoy is McCoy, Spock is Spock and Kirk…well, he is as always…Kirk. Yes, I'll wait here while you run to read fic. LOL.

Title: A New Day
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kodiak_bear
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 6700
Summary: After Jim tells Bones to 'Buckle Up', where'd they go first? This is that mission.

Link: http://kodiak-bear.livejournal.com/174709.html

Reader Notes: Before the movie went to credits, we see our Enterprise is set to go off, presumably to a mission. [livejournal.com profile] kodiak_bear gives us that mission. If we ever wished the movie went on to TV, in nice shiny 42 minutes (gone are the days of 52 minutes) weekly adventures, guess what? [livejournal.com profile] kodiak_bear has done it here. I can list the myriad of emotions you go through reading the first mission, but that would be like spoilers. And I don't do spoilers. LOL. Just go read. It's the kind of classic Trek you wished the movie continued on to and [livejournal.com profile] kodiak_bear hasn't disappoint us yet. My only regret was there wasn't more fic of hers for me to rec.

Title: Not Acting
Author: [livejournal.com profile] blcwriter
Rating: R
Word Count: 1837
Summary: "Pike craned his ears even as his heart clenched for the two young men, among Starfleet's best and brightest and both were already feeling weary and dim" Pike's observations in sickbay on the way back to Earth. Kirk/McCoy friendship.

Link: http://blcwriter.livejournal.com/5038.html?format=light

Reader Notes: The Kirk/McCoy friendship has been a standout for me since the movie and [livejournal.com profile] blcwriter always does a fantastic and ring-true depiction of this dynamic for me. They're two guys, both stubborn and brash in their own ways and just darn good friends. And to put it in the POV of a recovering Pike? Sheer brilliance. It's hurt/comfort without the mush, two guys bickering but do something entirely different to what they say.

Title: Not Easily Impressed
Author: [livejournal.com profile] zinfic
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1100
Summary: Uhura has to give James Kirk one thing - he has endurance.

Link: http://zinfic.livejournal.com/78499.html?format=light

Reader Notes: We went from movie Uhura where she barely tolerated Jim Kirk to acknowledging he was captain. Somewhere in-between, an epiphany had to have occurred. This fantastic Uhura POV gives us just that with a unique glimpse of the friendship between McCoy and Kirk. While the title indicated Uhura wasn't that easily impressed, the narration and dead on characterization impressed me.

Title: Notes On Captaining A Starship
Author: [livejournal.com profile] calapine
Rating: G
Summary: In which a captain wishes to develop a more intimate relationship with a ship he has a habit of anthropomorphising.

Link: http://calapine.livejournal.com/557205.html

Reader Notes: You know, every so often, you have to remember while there's dark and angsty, there has to be fun as well and while Jim Kirk might not have thought it fun, this fic, for the readers, is. What I love are the little nods to classic Trek a fan of TOS would totally appreciate and the punchy narration guarantees a grin when you get to the end. This is pure reading enjoyment.

Title: Parts of a Whole
Author: [livejournal.com profile] schweinsty
Rating: PG-13 for language and H/C.
Summary: Some families are born; others are chosen and tested and trusted to watch your back.

Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5088605/1/Parts_of_a_Whole

Reader Notes: I honestly can't stop reading anything of schweinsty. Little scenes of Kirk getting his crew together. All about making friendships. Cute.

Title: Reality Bites
Author: [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock
Rating: PG
Summary: The fifth time the Enterprise slips into an alternate reality, Captain Kirk wants to stay.

Link: http://igrockspock.livejournal.com/6007.html

Reader Notes: An amusing narration with a tinge of gleeful, "pew-pew", Kobayashi Maru Kirk. It's worth reading through just for the last. Two. Lines. And don't try to read ahead to the bottom for it. They're innocuous, isolated they seem almost ordinary. But if you read the story, the last two lines sums up the fic=fricking brilliant.

Title: Relieving Pressure
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jedibuttercup
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 4300+
Summary: By the fourth morning Christopher Pike wakes up in the sickbay of the USS Enterprise, he is heartily sick of his surroundings, his circumstances, his own emotional reactions to the above, and just about every other facet of his current existence.

Link: http://jedibuttercup.livejournal.com/318590.html

Reader Notes: The great thing about this fandom is the exploration of the dynamic between him and Kirk. The writer has taken it with such a brilliant, real, honest POV of Pike during the end of the movie. He's detailed and politically minded, a captain despite his condition, ever mindful of his ship and her lifeblood: the crew. His interactions with McCoy was great, his handling of Kirk fleshed out Pike to the forefront that the movie hadn't a chance to do. He was both father figure and commanding officer with Kirk. I adored the movie's Pike, this fic made him my favorite.

Title: Roommates
Author: [livejournal.com profile] cole_chan
Rating: G
Summary: With no quarters aboard the Enterprise to call his own, Jim Kirk goes to the one person he can always count on. (Missing Scene)

Link: http://community.livejournal.com/gins_lair/8773.html

Reader Notes: This is a clever parallel. The story is about post-movie recovery, bunking with McCoy yet you get the feeling this has happened all before: the grumpy conversations, the sleeping on the couch, the begrudging caretaking. This gem with its echoes back to the Academy days is pure win.

Title: Search and Rescue
Author: [livejournal.com profile] _seven_crows
Rating: PG for violence
Summary: "You think they've been keeping Jim for twelve hours by asking politely?"

Link: http://users.livejournal.com/_seven_crows/14538.html

Reader Notes: This author always likes to take the typical and give it her/his own wicked twist. Plot: Kirk is in trouble (No, really?) but how they all get him out is just so fun to read. Again. The author nails the dialogue and it's like we were graced with a tv episode of the Reboot'verse. And the comfort is never left out or over the top mushy.

Title: Someone to look after you
Author: [livejournal.com profile] kei_rin
Rating: PG
Spoilers: All over the place for the movie. Takes place before the end and presumes knowledge of the movie.
Summary: "He’d be a good Captain. He’d look after the ship and her crew and get the job done. He just doesn’t know how to look after himself"

Link: http://kei-rin.livejournal.com/24377.html

Reader Notes: There are many great fics out there that returns Kirk and Spock back on track to their legendary friendship. Kei_rin decides to take a wonderful detour, dropping us directly after the movie ends when Spock still can't quite sort out what Kirk is. He is a reluctant comforter with co-conspirator Bones in getting Jim Kirk to sleep. It gives us a brilliant insight on the paving to the trio we've loved in the original series.

Title: Starting Gate
Author: [livejournal.com profile] liketheriverrun
Rating: T
Word Count: ~5000
Summary: You didn't think everyday would be like their first on Enterprise, did you?

Link: http://liketheriverrun.livejournal.com/56187.html?format=light

Reader Notes: After my initial arm flail, I settled down to read. Now, many of you already know her from other fandoms (and if not, here's her Master List), when I first saw she wrote a Star Trek fic, well, -insert more arm flailing here-

Her mastery with voices, to crawl into the head of a character has not diminished from jumping into a new fandom. Her voice of choice here is our lovable Leonard "Bones" McCoy and he is perfect. His mannerisms, his thoughts, the slightly barbed observations don't completely hide the kinder side of Bones that has so endeared him to us. His friendship with Jim has evolved yet still give us enough of a hint what it must be like back then in the Academy. He was acerbic yet still personable for us and [livejournal.com profile] liketheriverrun has managed to depict him in all his dimensions as we see life on the Enterprise in his eyes.

Go read and keep your fingers crossed she'll stand in this fandom.

Title: The James T. Kirk Touch
Author: [livejournal.com profile] schweinsty
Rating: G
Characters: Bones, Ensemble
Word Count: 645
Summary: None given

Link: http://community.livejournal.com/ficcy_fic/33589.html

Reader Notes: Urban's McCoy is fun. It was fun to watch on screen and fun to read here in this fic. He has a minced, begrudging POV as he watches life evolve from Academy to ship. It's just simply fun to read his take on Kirk.

Title: Twenty-Six
Author: [livejournal.com profile] cole_chan
Rating: PG-13 for language and H/C. Jim's having a very bad day...
Summary: James T. Kirk turns twenty-six, but the day's turning into a no-win situation.

Link: http://community.livejournal.com/gins_lair/6916.html

Reader Notes: It's angsty, it's Vulcan grabby throat breathless, it's a Kirk POV about whether he'll see his twenty-sixth birthday. I would say more but I think after reading the first paragraph, this fic will sell itself.

Like the fic you read here? Want more? Share feedback with the writers then, darn it. Feedback a writer and you may feed a muse!

OMG! I just DL'd most of these this weekend. Are we on the same brain-wave, or what?!

I might have more; I'll let you know.

...all helped by the fact that Pine and Quinto are utterly adorkable, and Urban's McCoy was frickin' awesome!

I look forward to working my way through those :)

I too am hooked on the 'new' Star Trek characters and I've been reading fanfic for it over on ff.net but I have to wade through quite a lot to get to the good stuff.

I'm sure all these will be awesome though - I foresee some late nights ahead... *g*

Oh, it took me a while to get a nice big list collected. I'm hoping as would many fic rec lists, it'll invite people to post their favorites too as one can never have enough fics to read.

Write, however, that's another story. LOL

Thanks for the recs!

I totally second James and the Giant Ship, but I've fallen in love with anything by [livejournal.com profile] blcwriter (though, as most of hers are Kirk/McCoy, they wouldn't qualify for your "gen" list).

Omg, your icon makes me weep. :)

[livejournal.com profile] blcwriter is fantastic. I personally don't read slash but have friends who do whom I gladly point to her LJ. I love her gen and wouldn't be surprised if her slash echoes the same heart and talent as well. :)

Looking forward to them, having enjoyed the last lot :)

Sorry to hear you've had a tough week, I really hope it is improving.

I need some escapist reading myself as I just (nervously) posted a one-off story that I wrote purely for a friend and she then nudged me into putting out there for everyone. (Or, I should say, the half dozen people who actually read my stuff..)

Anyway.. It's enough to remind me why I quit! *g*

Did you get to see 'Merlin' yesterday btw? And if so, did you like it? I thought of you actually at 8pm our time as I was watching a new series of 'Top Gear' begin ;)

This is a wonderful post of recs, but you might want to go through and take care of the repeats.
