Really, in the day and age of economic and global environmental crisis, I shouldn't be squeeing but...
My Real Ghostbusters DVDs are here!
LOL. Okay, there are a lot of serious issues out there I should be concerned with, but can I say what a joy it was to receive that innocuous brown bread box by my disgruntled "Why Am I wearing Shorts Today" postal worker today? No, not War and Peace but a nice decades old cartoon called Real Ghostbusters(1986-1991). I guess I'm not above materialistic joy. -squee with Snoopy dance-
We (the fans) paid globs of money for bootleg VCDs, traded for heavy old-fashion TDK VHS and waited years for the official versions to come out. Nice clean, non-jittery, uncut versions that we no longer have to squint to.
Time-Life came out this collection late fall with a complete (you heard me, complete) set for a whopping price of $179.99. But with a 20% coupon, Black Friday 10% deal and free shipping, I snagged the set as an early Christmas/New Year/birthday present to myself. I'll probably be a hermit for months after this but read my lips: complete set. :D
This DVD set could have easily been the biggest regret of my life. How many DVD sets do we buy and are utterly disappointed with? But Time-Life outdid themselves.
The set is boxed within a psuedo firehouse, heavy duty, with holograms on the spine. Inside, the DVDs are coupled into five aluminum DVD cases. Not cardboard, not plastic, but a nice metallic, full-color case for 5 DVDs. Yes, Virginia, this collection is 25 DVDs long.
The quality of the video is clear and crisp for the time it was made. No glitches so far, no blips and best of all, our beloved Lorenzo Music was kept as the voice of Peter Venkman on the original episodes. No more surfer dude Venkman! There is a Christmas!
Time-Life didn't cut the budget on quality here. Presentation, video quality, even the slick booklet was done as if by a fan. Someone over there listened to what we wanted.
Not surprisingly, there's not that many extras given no one conceived making DVD extras back then. There were commentaries from some, but not all (Music passed away in August 2001) and there are no subtitles. The audio is mono but hello? Back when they aired, we were still debating beta-max! LOL.
All in all, I am happy. Like squee-factor happy and I am now compelled to go trolling for my Anders and Paulson RGB fics again. The set invites great memories, a happier time, remembered warm fuzzies and for that, it is money well spent.
