I have to watch it again, because I've still only watched it once.
I kept thinking it was going to work. That the boys were going to pull it off, and somehow end up together. (To be honest, I thought they might both end up in hell, which may have been the way it would have worked if there hadn't been a season six.)
I can understand why Sam wanted Dean to promise to try to have a life after his...departure, and why he didn't want the cycle of sacrifice to continue. What I didn't understand was why he thought Dean would be happy going back to Lisa, a woman he knew eleven years ago for a weekend, and for a couple days two years ago. They're complete strangers!
It would have made more sense if Sam had asked Dean to complete a mission. Open an orphanage for kids whose parents were killed by monsters, for example. Something like that would be more Dean-like, to my mind. I think Dean would find love if he settled down, it seems silly to have created this "instant family" for him. (To be honest, I wondered if Lisa was even real. She's conveniently still there, still waiting, still single) when he needs her. Shades of Chuck!
And poor Sam. Yes, he's out of hell, but to leave him standing outside, in the dark, looking in on the "happy family"? That's cold. If Chuck were serious about leaving the boys happy, he could have at least left him at the door, with the doorbell ringing! I'm disappointed.
I really hope that they fix this first thing in the first episode. Do I think Dean would pick Lisa and Ben over Sam if he had the choice? Not for a single second. Does Sam? Not if he's thinking straight. Do I fear that one of the writers won't see it this way? Unfortunately, yes.
I hope I'm wrong though. I want to watch two brothers, together. Saving people, hunting things. Forever and ever, amen. :)
